Inner Geographies

[A Program in Development]

Inner Geographies is an emerging initiative exploring the relationship between inner development, global citizenship, systems thinking, and collective futures.

Rooted in the idea of the geographical imagination — the capacity to understand the interconnected relationships between people, places, systems, and lived experiences — the program investigates how inner worlds shape outer worlds. It asks not only how we understand global challenges, but also what human capacities are needed to navigate them wisely, collaboratively, and ethically.

The initiative is developing at the intersection of:

  • global citizenship education
  • Inner Development Goals (IDGs)
  • Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs)
  • systems thinking
  • intercultural dialogue
  • reflective practice
  • futures thinking
  • community inquiry

The program recognizes that many learners already understand the realities of inequality, climate change, polarization, technological disruption, and global interdependence. Increasingly, however, there is a need for educational spaces that also cultivate the inner capacities required to engage with these realities meaningfully.

Inner Geographies explores questions such as:

  • What capacities will people and communities need by 2050?
  • How do identity, worldview, and perception shape systems?
  • How do we sustain dialogue across difference?
  • What does ethical global citizenship require in an age of complexity?
  • How do inner development and systems change influence one another?

The program is intentionally interdisciplinary and experiential, emphasizing:

  • dialogue circles
  • collaborative inquiry
  • systems mapping
  • reflective journaling
  • intercultural learning
  • perspective-taking
  • futures imagination
  • community-building

Current projects in development include:

  • 2050: Inner Development for a Shared World (Short Course)
  • educator resources and lexicons connected to the IDGs
  • dialogue-based global citizenship workshops
  • online learning communities
  • reflective inquiry models connected to sustainability education

Inner Geographies is envisioned not as a fixed curriculum, but as an evolving educational platform and community of practice that helps learners connect inner reflection with global responsibility and collective futures.

At its core, the initiative is guided by a simple but increasingly urgent question: What kinds of people do we need to become in order to live well together in a shared and changing world?
