AP Human Geography: Independent Study Course & Exam Preparation
The GIEI offers a comprehensive AP Human Geography program for students studying independently, homeschooling, attending schools that do not offer AP Human Geography, or seeking a more personalized and rigorous learning experience.
Students may enroll in either a full-year course, a semester-intensive course, or a customized coaching program designed around individual goals and schedules. All courses are delivered online through a combination of live Zoom classes and asynchronous learning activities housed in Google Classroom.
Course Philosophy
AP Human Geography is more than a test-preparation course. It is an introduction to geographic thinking—a way of understanding the relationships among people, places, cultures, economies, political systems, and environments. Students learn to analyze contemporary issues through geographic concepts and models while developing the critical thinking and writing skills expected in university-level coursework.
Our goal is not simply to prepare students for an exam, but to help them become thoughtful observers and interpreters of the world around them.
Course Structure
The course follows the College Board AP Human Geography curriculum and is organized around the seven official units:
- Thinking Geographically
- Population and Migration Patterns and Processes
- Cultural Patterns and Processes
- Political Patterns and Processes
- Agriculture and Rural Land Use
- Cities and Urban Land Use
- Industrial and Economic Development Patterns and Processes
Students engage in a blend of:
- Synchronous Zoom classes for discussion, instruction, and guided practice
- Google Classroom assignments and readings
- AP-style multiple-choice and free-response practice
- Vocabulary development and concept review
- Geographic case studies and current events
- Unit assessments and progress checks
- Mock AP examinations and detailed feedback
Program Options
Full-Year Course
A traditional academic-year experience designed to mirror the pacing and depth of a school-based AP Human Geography course. Recommended for students seeking a comprehensive introduction to the discipline.
Semester Intensive
An accelerated version of the course designed for highly motivated students who can dedicate significant time to independent study between meetings.
Exam Preparation & Coaching
Individualized support for students already enrolled in AP Human Geography or preparing independently for the AP Exam. Sessions focus on content review, exam strategy, multiple-choice practice, and free-response writing.
What Makes The GIEI Different?
Students work directly with an experienced geography educator and long-time AP Human Geography Exam Reader. Instruction emphasizes both content mastery and the development of geographic thinking skills. Because classes are intentionally small or individualized, students receive detailed feedback, personalized guidance, and a level of academic mentorship rarely available in traditional classroom settings.
